Rehabilitation Q & A

What is rehabilitation?

Rehabilitation is a branch of physical medicine that works to improve your physical strength following an accident, injury, or surgery. If you’re recovering from a car crash or orthopedic surgery, it’s tempting to jump back into your normal routine right away. However, moving too quickly increases your risk of complications and may slow down the healing process.

During rehabilitation, a physical therapist and team of orthopedic specialists work with you to make everyday tasks such as walking, bathing, and getting dressed easy and hassle-free. In addition, rehabilitation teaches you exercises that strengthen your muscles and promote healing.

Why do I need rehabilitation?

Surgery, sports-related injuries, and automobile accidents take a serious toll on your body. Rehabilitation works to speed up the recovery process, so you can return to work and other routine activities as soon as possible.

Rehabilitation usually starts in the hospital. Once you’re well enough to participate in physical activity, a physical therapist helps you get out of your hospital bed and start walking again. You also learn a series of exercises to get you ready to return home.

After you’re released from the hospital, you’re asked to participate in regular rehabilitation appointments. No two rehabilitation treatment regimens are exactly alike, but it’s important to attend each one of your appointments. Failing to attend rehabilitation limits your progress and may lead to other complications.

How does rehabilitation promote recovery?

Rehabilitation is a serious commitment, but the benefits are well worth it. At Star Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, the goals of rehabilitation include:

  • Reduced pain
  • Improved mobility and range of motion
  • Stronger muscles
  • Walking again

Rehabilitation also re-teaches you how to perform daily activities such as climbing stairs, getting out of bed, bathing, and dressing.

Am I a candidate for rehabilitation?

To determine if you’re a candidate for rehabilitation, make an appointment with Dr. Petrasic at Star Orthopedics and Sports Medicine. Following a review of your medical history and physical exam, Dr. Petrasic can make treatment recommendations that align with your needs.

That said, if you’re recovering from surgery or sports-related injury and conservative measures of care don’t improve your symptoms, you’re probably a good candidate.
